Peter Cybul

Peter D. Cybul, a retired Bridgeport police lieutenant, who founded Christmas Village and created baseball teams for the Police Athletic League during his career, died June 20, 2002, following a lengthy battle with cancer in Port Charlotte, Florida, where he resided following retirement. Mr. Cybul joined the Bridgeport Police Department in1942 following a brief stint as a city firefighter. He retired in October 1976. He formed the PAL baseball team for boys ages 10 to 12 at the Father Panik Village housing project on the East Side, in 1949. Cybul coached or supervised several other baseball teams of the PAL as his police career unfolded. Cybul was named head of the police Youth Bureau in 1962, a position he held until he retired. In that capacity, he also served as president of the PAL. Mr. Cybul was instrumental in founding Christmas Village at Beardsley Park in 1972, which annually shares holiday presents and cheer with needy city children.
